November 27, 2007, Baguio City. — The newly formed Baguio United Football Club (BUFC) has organized a one-day 7-A-Side Tournament called the Baguio Chistmas 7-A-Side Tournament to be held on December 16, 2007, 8am to 5pm at the Melvin Jones Football Grounds, Baguio City (Melvin Jones). This tournament is the first step towards the revival of soccer at Baguio City. Around ten teams from Baguio City and adjacent areas are expected to join this event.
BUFC is composed of former RP team players, current collegiate players and veteran and youth soccer players dedicated towards the revival of soccer at Baguio City through the hosting of soccer tournaments at Melvin Jones, and training elementary and high school students and out-of-school youths with the fundamentals of the “beautiful game”.
Baguio City is unique in that it’s the summer capital of the Philippines and that its center one finds the Melvin Jones Football Grounds (along with the famous Burnham Park). With its cool and clean climate, Baguio City is ideal for playing soccer games (friendly or tournaments) anytime there is enough sunlight (at this time, there are still no night lights to allow evening games or tournaments). Out-of-town teams from neighboring areas including Manila-based teams will appreciate the climate, parks and tourist destinations of Baguio City, before or after the games or tournament.
BUFC has planned several soccer tournaments in the next coming months (11-A-Side and 7-A-Side), which will be open to teams or clubs outside Baguio/La Trinidad. The current tournament is a men’s open tournament. The succeeding tournaments will include other categories such as women’s, Under-19, Under-16, Under-12 and Under-8 categories.
