Melvin Jones Football Grounds, Baguio City. – On May 30-31, 2009, Baguio City will host the Baguio Open Centennial Soccer Tournament for the Men’s Open 11-a-side Soccer Tournament and on May 31, 2009, the Ladies Open 7-a-side Soccer Tournament. Aside from the established clubs and teams from Baguio-Benguet like the Baguio United Football Club (BUFC), Saint Louis University (SLU), Baguio Football Club (BFC), Benguet State University (BSU), African United, several foreign teams and out-of-town teams have signified interest in joining the Baguio Open. Out-of-town teams such as the Pangasinan State University FC and Manaoag FC have already confirmed their participation. Davao FC and Makati FC have shown interest in joining as well. Teams with foreign players have also signified interest such as the Team Europe (composed of expatriates from Cebu MEPZA), Korean FC, Mayanmar FC, Union FC (Iranian team) and Sudanese team. All in all, Baguio Cup will test the mettle of soccer players from several countries including the Philippines.
As for the Ladies Open on May 31, 2009, it will be a 7-a-side soccer tournament with the Baguio Ladies (lead by Former Philippine team player and current SLU Coach Ana Cabanilla) spearheading several ladies teams invited for the event.
There will be free film showing of soccer movies and highlights at the Melvin Jones Grand Stand as well as raffle promos throughout the tournament. Players and sports enthusiasts are encouraged to come to see this soccer festival.
The Baguio Open is part of the several sports events of the Baguio Centennial Commission with the support of Department of Tourism and organized by the Baguio United Football Club, Inc. headed by its president Cesar Eslao.
